When thinking of deserts, first things that pop into mind are dry, sandy, eroded wastelands. Maybe a few bushes or cactus growing here and there. But the Badlands region, a part of the vast Utah desert, bring us to surprise every now and then. When the water conditions are right, these rigid fields burst with color and life in the form of incredible wildflowers.
Once a year, this arid stone-scape bursts into life with sweeping fields of Scorpion Weed, Beeplant at the flowers of the Pincushion Cacti. Swathes of yellow and the distinctive purple of the Scorpion Weed battle with the grey and brown tones of the earth and rock. Indicative of the harsh quality of The Badlands, despite being an attractive bloom, the flower of the Scorpion Weed will leave a nasty stinging rash if touched.
Plants seek to conserve as much water as possible, thus they bloom and reproduce very quickly. But the same transience of such spectacle turns it into a jaw-dropping experience.
