95-year-old Indian man enrolls for a Masters degree...

<p dir="ltr">95-year-old Raj Kumar Vaishya's lifelong dream of obtaining a post-graduate degree is set to be realized. He enrolled for MA in Economics at the Nalanda Open University on September 8 for the 2015-16 session.</p>
<blockquote><p dir="ltr">"I am nearer to fulfilling my long cherished dream of a postgraduate degree in economics. My aim is not to get a degree; the thrust is to study and gain knowledge of economics so as to understand the problems facedby the people and the country and to contribute something, if possible," says Vaishya. <br>

<p dir="ltr"><br>
The widower who can still read without spectacles and lives with one of his sons and daughter-in-law in Rajendra Nagar colony, says he wished to study economics also to understand why the country had failed to solve problems like poverty, illiteracy and joblessness.</p>
<p dir="ltr">His son Santosh Kumar, now in his early 70s, retired from the National Institute of Technology, Patna, whereas daughter-in-law Bharti S. Kumar, in her early 60s, retired as a professor from Patna University.</p>
<blockquote><p dir="ltr">"Initially, they told me studying is not an easy task at this age, but later agreed to support me in view of my commitment. My son will teach me mathematics and statistics and the daughter-in-law will pitch in with other help," Vaishya said. "I have decided to devote two hours daily in the morning and night hours to studies. After post-graduation, I will not pursue a PhD," he said.<br>

NOU Registrar S.P. Sinha said it was a pleasant experience for university officials when told about Vaishya’s keenness to join the postgraduate course. "When we came to know that he can read and write fluently as well, it was decided to send a team of NOU officials to his apartment to enrol him in view of his old age. We enrolled him on September 8 for the 2015-16 session and provided the study material in Hindi. However, he demanded the study material and books in English; we will provide these to him soon," Sinha revealed.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Born on April 1, 1920, in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly town, Vaishya did his graduation from Agra University in 1938 and got a degree in law in 1940. He said he failed to do post-graduation then due to increasing family responsibilities.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The 95-year-old reads books, newspapers, and magazines and is a fan of of TV serials like “Jodha Akbar” and “Razia Sultan” He can write fluently in Hindi and English with a steady hand. He however uses a walker after fracturing his leg some years ago. "Otherwise, I am healthy," said Vaishya.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He revealed that his secret to a long life was simple living and leaving everything else to God. "I accept everything as it happens. Today tension kills more than anything else. People, particularly the young, should learn to live without stress." A vegetarian and a lover of simple traditional Indian food, he said he never consumed fried food and always ate less than he needed. "Overeating kills more people than starvation" he added.</p>

I was posted to Ekiti State for my 
Nigerian Youth Service Corps Year and it has been one bad news after the
 other from the lips of others.<br />
<em>Ekiti State does not have money oh…</em><br />
<em> Ekiti State Government nor dey pay well…</em><br />
<em> Ekiti State nor dey do this and that…</em></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reports have generally been the same from youth corpers serving in other States, and sincerely, it is just tiring.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The negative attitude from most youth 
corpers coupled with the belief that nothing good will come out of NYSC 
for them is terrible(for lack of a better word)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Is the clarion call meant for what we can get from our PPA (Primary Place of Assignment) States or for what we can give out?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I do not intend for this article to be 
turned into a debate on whether or not the Nigerian Youth Service Corp 
scheme has lost its usefulness in Nigeria, but I would also love to 
point out that we have corpers whose lives never remained the same after
 their service year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had read about Otto Orondaam and saw 
him for the first time when I went for an event while I was in Nigerian 
Law School. No, let me correct that, I didn’t see him before I 
recognised him; I saw his name on the list I was holding and I 
recognized it immediately.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Why?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Because he had made a difference; one 
which started from his NYSC year. The same service year some youths 
engage in, angry and filled with indignation at the thought of serving 
Nigeria for one whole year.<br />
The same service year that others come out from with nothing but kids 
smarting from the strokes of their cane and no positive impact made in 
their lives whatsoever.<br />
You sit there and grumble about the yoruba kids who cannot speak English
 language in your class while others are bring up innovative ideas to 
help.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are kids who will never forget 
another corper just like you because of the seeds that were sown in 
their lives by that youth corper.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Again I ask…<br />
Is the clarion call meant for what we can gain from these States or for what we can give out?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Who would recognize your name on a list after your service year? Not for things you have taken but for impacts you have made?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Youths are making waves… Strong might waves… youths just like us.<br />
What exactly are we doing?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If I hear one more “there’s no money in 
Ekiti State”, I swear, I will throw up. This is not the time to moan and
 cry. It’s time to THINK and IMPACT</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We (youths) need a total overhaul of our
 mind sets. Youths have served in NYSC like us and emerged with 
sustainable indelible footprints in their PPA States. We think NYSC is 
just for a year but if we take this negative thinking into the world, 
then we are practically done for.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is not just about <em>allowee</em> 
of 19,800Naira, this is more than that. Whose life can we touch in that 
so-called dry State we were posted to? If that State is indeed as dry as
 we say it is, then how can our entrance make it better? After all, we 
chant ‘I am the light and salt of the earth” from the Bible each day.<br />
Does the light shine only in selective places or in everywhere it goes? 
Some persons went to NYSC Camp to have fun and that is not bad in 
itself, but I always say that I was inspired beyond bounds during in my 
time at orientation camp. Yes, the lectures were boring but still, they 
stirred something in my spirit.<br />
In as much as terrible news and views abound about NYSC, there also 
abound greater stories of youths who made impact in their PPA States 
before they left.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Which would we be? The whiners?<br />
Or the winners who will fight to leave imprints on the sands of time in these States?<br />
Not for the awards, but for a genuine interest in impacting lives positively.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It depends on us.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You could waste the one year and trash your khaki with furious indignation afterwards…<br />
Or you could invest positively in some lives and look back fondly at your time spent during NYSC.<br />
It is your choice.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You could take out these last days of 
the year to plan how you will make an impact during your service year in
 2015 or you could go back to your PPA State angry at the Nigerian 
Government for not scrapping out NYSC.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Either ways, you have one year laid out in front of you. To bemoan and waste it?<br />
Or to impact and leave footprints on the sands of time and hearts?</div>

Anita Osariemen Omonuwa from Edo-state has achieved a feat
that has never been attained in the 122 years of existence of UK institution,
University of Reading. She graduated with a First Class degree in Law from the
university which is rated among the top 1% in the world.<br />

She was among the
students who got the “Chancellors Award” by the Chancellor of the University, <span style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #333333;">Sir John Madejski</span>, who
happens to be the founder of AutoTrader and Chairman of Reading Football Club. </div>

actually graduated from Reading in 2012 but just finished from the Nigerian Law

Laws degree ever since the Nigerian Law

Augustine Omonuwa, OFR who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). </div>

The former director of Pittsburg State's College of Business is 
facing federal charges of defrauding Nigerian graduate students 
recruited to attend the school.<br />
<br />
Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that 
61-year-old Michael Muoghalu of Pittsuburg faces one count of wire fraud
 and one count of money laundering.<br />
<br />

Muoghalu is accused of taking more than $148,000 
in refunds due to the Nigerian students in Pittsburg State's Masters of 
Business Administration program.<br />

The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports that 
prosecutors allege that beginning in 2006 Muoghalu worked with an 
unknown accomplice in Nigeria to persuade 15 Nigerian students to give 
him part of the refunds they received on deposits for tuition and fees.<br />
<br />

Muoghalu was suspended in June and resigned Sept. 15.<br />
