The Head of the European Union Election Observation Mission, Santiago Fisas on Monday, February 16, 2015 hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for his stance that the May 29 handover date is sacrosanct, stating that it was constitutional.
Mr. Fisas made the commendation to State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja after holding a meeting with President Jonathan.
He said: “As the Chief Observer, European Union, I must meet with all the candidates for these elections.
“I met twice with Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and today President Jonathan. He kindly accepted to receive me and my team, the EU Ambassador, the Deputy of Observer European Union colleagues, just to have exchange of views about the elections.
“I’m very happy to be assured by the President that the inauguration of the next President will take place on May 29. I think this is very good news because this is constitutional.”
When he was questioned whether he had doubts about President Jonathan’s sincerity, he said: “Yes. I don’t see why I should doubt that. The President said that publicly and also to us. We asked questions on security and he said to us that in a very short period of time, the security situation will improve a lot.”
Fisas further revealed that President Jonathan confirmed to the EU delegation that rumours that he was trying to set up an Interim National Government was false as such an arrangement does not have any place in the Nigerian Constitution.
